How to Plan for Last Minute Moves
Sometimes life just happens and you find yourself needing to move house with about five minutes’ notice. Maybe a sale finally went through after months of waiting or your landlord has dropped a bombshell. Whatever the reason, trying to sort out last minute moves is enough to make anyone want to hide under the duvet.
It feels impossible but people do it every day. We see it all the time at Transporter Removals. People call us very stressed because they’ve got to be out by Friday and it’s already Wednesday. The good news is that you can actually get it done without losing your mind if you follow a few simple steps.
Get your team sorted first
The very first thing you need to do is find out who is actually available to move your stuff. There is no point making a massive plan if every van in the area is booked up. When you’re looking for last minute moves you need to be quick on the phone.
Give us a ring at Transporter Removals or find another reliable firm that knows how to handle a rush. Be honest about how much stuff you have. Don’t try to downplay the three sheds and the attic because it’ll only cause grief on the day. We can usually find a way to squeeze you in or offer a man and van service if it’s a smaller flat. Getting the professionals booked in takes a massive weight off your shoulders straight away.
Forget being perfect with packing
If you had six weeks you could colour code every box and wrap every single teaspoon in tissue paper. The reality is you don’t have that luxury now. When you’re dealing with last minute moves you just need to get things into boxes safely.
Grab as many boxes as you can get your hands on. If you can’t buy proper ones quickly then ask at the local supermarket or check Facebook marketplace. Start with the rooms you don’t use much like the spare room or the dining room. We find a lot of people tend to start overthinking it but now is the best time to just put things in boxes and make sure you bubble wrap the breakables.
One trick we always tell people is to leave your clothes on the hangers. Just pull a bin bag up from the bottom and tie it around the hooks. It saves hours of folding and you can just hang them straight up in the new place.
Be ruthless with your rubbish
If you are in a rush to move out but also have a lot of belongings it is a good time to have a quick clear out to reduce the amount of items that need to be transported. Moving house is the best time to declutter but with last minute moves it is even more important.
The less you have to move the faster and cheaper it’ll be. Have a bin bag for actual rubbish and a box for things to take to the charity shop. If you’ve got furniture that won’t fit or you don’t want then list it for free on a local group for immediate collection. Someone will usually come and take it off your hands within a few hours.
Pack a survival kit
This is the one thing people always forget when they’re in a rush. When you get to the new house at 8pm and you’re exhausted you won’t want to be hunting through twenty boxes for a tea bag or your toothbrush.
Put together a bag with the essentials. Things such as:
- the kettle and some mugs
- chargers for your phones
- basic toiletries and medication
- a change of clothes
- any important paperwork for the house
- some snacks and maybe a bottle of something to celebrate
Keep this bag with you in the car so it doesn’t get lost in the back of the van. It makes the first night much more manageable.
Don’t forget the admin tasks
Even with last minute moves you still have to tell people you’re moving. It’s easy to forget when you’re busy taping up boxes. You need to sort your energy bills and water first. Take photos of the meters before you leave the old place and as soon as you walk into the new one. It stops any arguments later on.
Update your address with your bank and insurance company too. If you’re really pushed for time just set up a redirect with the royal mail. It costs a bit of money but it buys you time to update everyone else later on.
Why pro movers make the difference in last minute moves
You might be tempted to just rent a van and do it yourself to save money but honestly if you’re doing this last minute then having a crew who knows what they’re doing is worth every penny.
